The Dangers of Fundamentalism

This was posted on my online school from a very dedicated student, Caspar. He had found it at the front of the Maciocia Foundations book.

Fans of The Spark (and also in The Uncharted Body) may remember that I say that, from first principles, the Ren channel should be called the Yolk Sac Channel.* This then gives a really clear idea about what it is and why you use it which makes you a better acupuncturist… hopefully.

The ‘Conception Vessel’ is a complete mistranslation. Rather, it should be the Yolk Sac Channel (see Spark)

Over and over again we find mistranslations that are faithfully reproduced by students (and scholars) of Chinese medicine. This is why we need to be extremely careful about what I call 'Chinese medicine fundamentalism', but, not because the ancients got it wrong but rather many distinguished veterans in our profession have got it wrong.

Don’t be a Chinese medicine kook, learn from the body and let the classics guide you! Doing it the other way around is like mistaking the map for the territory.

* If you find this reference in The Spark you might notice that the character is completely wrong too. I am absolved of all guilt in this as I told the publishers but they were too busy censoring the jokes about The O.C. to change it.
